Victim Support responds to number of prisoners released in error

28 July 2016

Victim Support responds to statistics released by the Ministry of Justice on the number of prisoners released in error.

Lucy Hastings, Director at independent charity Victim Support said:

“Many victims will be alarmed and frustrated by these findings, particularly where perpetrators of serious crimes have been released in error. Failure to ensure that offenders serve their full sentence can undermine public confidence in the criminal justice system and leave victims feeling like justice hasn’t been served.

“As a charity that supports thousands of crime victims every year, we know it can be distressing and worrying when offenders are released from custody – releases made in error can make this many times worse. It’s crucial that victims are kept informed about the support that’s available to help them cope and recover from crime.”
