Many victims of crime still waiting on compensation
New figures show that as many as 68% of victims are still waiting on court-ordered compensation they were granted half a year ago.
Responding to the statistics, Alex Mayes, Policy and Public Affairs Lead at Victim Support, said:
“Court-ordered compensation is a vital way of helping victims to access justice and practically rebuild their lives after crime. However, many victims must wait months or years for what is often small amounts of compensation. This ties victims to their assailants for longer, and denies them the chance to move on after crime.
“It is vital that the UK follows the lead of other countries, such as the Netherlands, by awarding victims with compensation up-front, so that they are free to move on with their lives.”
