Adolescent and child–to–parent violence
Child-to-parent or adolescent-to-parent violence can take the form of physical abuse such as hitting, slapping and kicking. But it also includes behaviours such as threats and manipulation, verbal abuse and belittling, threats to self-harm or kill, stealing money and/or property, damaging property, and even heightened sexual behaviours.
These behaviours are used to control the parent and is a form of abuse. It’s perhaps the most hidden form of abuse and is hugely under-reported because the parent (by parent we mean parents, carers, stepparents, grandparents, foster parents etc) can often feel isolated or ashamed.
You are not alone. One in ten families experience child or adolescent-to-parent violence at some point.
